Both sliding doors on my Dodge Caravan quit working. With some investigation, I was able to fix them. Here is a detailed method of fixing them yourself for just pennies. I hope this helps you as much as it did me. Over this last year, both side slide doors on my van quit working electrically within a month or two of each other.

I had known Dodge and Chrysler vans had problems with these doors, and I was not happy. I started looking on line for wire diagrams to help me try to troubleshoot the problem. I thought maybe it was a fuse problem or a bad motor. I found that a lot of people had the same problem. The main fix was to look for broken wires in the wire harness that follows the door as it opens and shuts. Many places described how to do fix it, but it was not clear reading them how to actually do it.

I will provide detailed instructions and pictures on how to look for this problem and how to fix it. It is actually easy to do and takes only about 15 minutes per door. There is a video at the end of this article that shows how to fix it, though the way I opened up the harness was different and easier than what he did in the video. You need to look at the plastic track-like harness and see where it connects to a pin underneath the door hinge.

Place small straight screwdriver between the harness and the pin and pry down on the plastic harness. It will pop off from the pin.

Pry the hinges of the track apart where the rotate as the door opens and closes. Do this to about five to eight sections of the track. With this section loose, slide it up the cable and check for broken wires. One of the two larger wires usually are broken. You can tell that they are broken because they will either be cut in half, as mine were, or you will see a bulge in the wire. I will suggest two ways to fix the wire, which you can choose from, or if you have another way, that's okay.

If this still does not fix the problem, keep undoing more sections of the harness to inspect more of the wiring. Fix any more broken wiring. Once the wire is fixed and working, you just have to put everything back together in reverse order of taking it apart. My suspicion is that one of these broken wires shorted out and burned up the module.

This failure shorted out my whole computer system and the van would not run. And the system uses a simple two-wire communication system between all of these modules. The short I had cause the communication to be interrupted and the van would not even run. To find this, they had to go one by one and disconnect each module throughout the van until the van would run. They then replaced the module. The sliding doors of a van can easily become too stiff to close. Fixing the problem yourself is a lot easier and cheaper than a visit to the dealer or a garage.

The following article will instruct you on how to properly lubricate the sliding doors of your van. You'll need to first lift up the tailgate in the rear of the van. Use the flat head screwdriver to remove the screw coverings. You can now use the Phillips head screwdriver to take out the screws for the taillight.

At this time you will have to force the uncovered assembly straight back so that you disconnect the pin that is in front of the exposed assembly. Be careful that you do not damage the paint on the vehicle. The pin is usually made out of plastic and, if it breaks, you can repair it with hot glue. If the pin breaks before it is removed you can use the socket wrench to remove the pin.

Doing this allows the sliding doors to open further so you can gain access to the parts you need to lubricate. Make sure that the sliding doors of the van are closed. You can then use the Phillips head screwdriver to take out the screws located at the back of the track cover. If your van has two sides you will be repeating this twice.

Now you may open the sliding doors. Use the ratchet wrench along with the proper socket to remove the bolt that is in the front of the cover of the track. Try not to drop the bolt, but if you do then you can use the magnetic tool to retrieve it. You can now close the sliding doors. Take the track cover and move it toward the rear about 1 inch.

You will now be able to see the actual track, gliding wheels, and movement track. Take the soft cloth and gently slide it over the cable and track from the back toward the front. The goal here is to try and remove any built up grime and dirt that may be present. You want to be able to see metal and not black grease or grime.

Once the sliding door assembly is cleaned you can lubricate it. Put a small amount of grease on a rag and rub it onto the track and cables. Use a generous amount to get the guide rails and cables well lubricated. Spray the wheels with the WD weight lubrication. Once the track and wheel are lubricated you should open and close the sliding doors several times. Add more grease and lubricant until the door glides open and closed.

Use another clean towel and wipe off the excess lubricant. This will prevent the assembly from acquiring clumps of grease and mess. The assembly can now be put back together.

When I locked my doors with the door button or key remote, in a few seconds, they unlocked and the lights came on. No matter what I did, the door wouldn't stay locked. My gut told me it was a problem with the key remote, as it had been acting up. So I took the remote off the keychain to see if I could get inside and maybe change the battery.

I couldn't do it, so I threw my key on the floor a couple of times. That must have reset whatever it was doing, because then my doors locked and didn't unlock automatically a few seconds later. I have since driven my vehicle and locked and unlocked the doors with no further problems. NO answered about a year ago. It's the key fob. After these fobs get a fairly amount of good use they seem to mess with all of it's controls.

Easily temporary fix for this issue for me has been 1 KrazyGlue, 2 Tweezers, 3 Rubbing Alcohol, 4 Toothbrush, 5 a well lit place i. Remove the battery from the board, remove the board and the rubber key pad from the top half of the fob housing "very carefully" not to separate the board from the rubber key pad. Now as slow as you can carefully separate the board from the rubber key pad and you should see a few silver colored small rounded contact plates lose and out of place.

Carefully separate these plates and clean them with rubbing alcohol then place them aside for a moment. Now brush off all the nasty grime the housing and rubber key pad has accumulated over the years use dish soap and water if needed. DO NOT submerge the board in any fluid what so ever simply dry brush carefully and remove any grime.

If needed used a QTip and small amount of rubbing alcohol to clean the contact points on the board. Let it all dry out for a few minutes if needed.

This part takes an orchestrated attempt because of the speed Krazy Glue dries you'll have to glue each silver contact one by one. In the inside of the rubber pad you'll see a central point where you'll place a very small amount of Krazy Glue and with your tweezers you'll line up the center of the belly side of the silver contact plate to it then let it dry. Repeat the same process with each contact plate. After your done and you are confident it's all dried proceed with assembling.

When I try to close the door the latch does not align correctly with the strike pin; but the thing is, it may be either too far forward or not forward enough!!! There seems to be a lot of slop in the roller arm. I'm wondering if I'm diagnosing the problem correctly.

Thanks, J. AcerDeVille answered 8 years ago. Had the same problem with a '94, it would actually fall off the van at times. I loosened all three or two, don't remember bolts on the front bottom hinge, then one by one removed each bolt and placed a washer between the door and hinge on each bolt raising the front of the door.

Seems the hinge wears out, and droops a little after a while. Hope this helps. Not really helpful. I already went through that process. The problem is in the rear slider. When the door is open, if you pull the rear edge of the door straight out or push it in it moves several inches in or out.

I close the door very carefully until the latch and strike pin match, I can push the door in and it latches. But if I close the door with a normal amount of force, the weight and momentum of the door causes the rear to swing wide and long. The latch strikes the end of the pin and bounces off causing stress on the latch and latch mount. It has to be something in the slider roller or the rail.
